G5RV

The first short wave antenna I bought was a G5RV antenna. It worked surprisingly well.

The first antenna I bought for the short wave bands was a G5RV antenna. Not resonant on any band, it uses a fixed length twin-lead feeder line. This feeder line is connected to a balancer.

Several people warned me about this antenna, but it worked surprisingly well. I had quite a few QSOs on the 10m and 20m bands. For some reason, my transceiver's integrated tuner was not able to match it to the 15m band.

I subsequently used it with a 300W amplifier and a manual tuner, mainly for FT8. Unfortunately, I never tried to match it to the 15m band with the manual tuner. Now it's dismounted. At some point, I'll have to try that.

I am currently not using this antenna and have replaced it with a 15m long trap dipole, which can also be used for the 40m band. But I keep the antenna around. It may come in handy in case my primary antenna gets damaged, or for mobile use.
