My Equipment

Hi, I'm DL8BNG, previously DO9NBN! My amateur radio license class E was issued on Jan 2025; class A was issued on May 2025. So I still have a lot of experimenting to do.

Here's some of the radio and auxiliary equipment I use:

Hermes Lite 2 SDR+Amplifier
Hermes Lite 2 SDR + 300 Watts Amplifier

I love free hardware and software (free as in freedom, not beer) and hence am very happy about the Hermes Lite 2 project. Of course I had to get one. The Hermes Lite 2 output power is rated at 36.9dBm (5Watts) maximum, which is fed into an MLA300 amplifier. The MLA300 has a maximum output power of 300 Watts.

I am still experimenting with my antennas; currently, I use a single 15m long multi band trap circuit dipole for short wave radio. This dipole supports the 10m, 15m, 20m and 40m bands.

ID5100E mobile transmitter
ICOM ID5100E+Diamond power/swr meter for local QSOs

VNA
Using the RigExpert VNA to analyze the Diamond X-30 antenna

I didn't expect a VNA to be such a useful instrument, but now that I've got one I wouldn't want to miss it. I've used it to analyze all my antennas and found the Diamond X-30 to be the one with the best SWR so far...

Spectrum Analyzer
A spectrum analyzer. I like a spectrum analyzer!

I originally bought this one to do EMV measurements of various "IoT" and other HF emitting circuitry I was experimenting with, but it turns out it's quite useful for amateur radio measurements as well.

PAC2200 power analyzer
Mennekes AMAXX housing + PAC2200 power meter

This PAC2200 power meter is quite useful for measuring the efficiency and power factor. It includes an oscilloscope function accessible from the browser.
